The NHL Playoffs Eastern Conference opened wide up when defending champs the Washington Capitals lost in the first round to the Carolina Hurricanes. Before that the New York Islanders disposed of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The only real non surprise in the Eastern Conference was the Toronto Maple Leafs losing for a 3rd straight time to the Boston Bruins in 7 games. Even though the NHL Leafs seemed to have a strangle hold on the series they let it slip through their finger tips and give up 2 straight games to the B’s.

Western Conference NHL Playoff Tree

The Western Conference saw more of the same in terms of upsets. The number one seed for the NHL Playoffs in the West was the Calgary Flames and they seemed to wet the bed against the Colorado Avalanche.

Many people didn’t see the St.Louis Blues defeating the Winnipeg Jets but thats exactly what happened. Jordan Binnington who is the St.Louis rookie net minder but all the NHL playoff weight on his shoulders and didn’t even flinch. Not to mention the stellar play by third liners and former NHL Leafs forward Tyler Bozak.

Dallas Stars surely upset the Nashville Predators with a stunning display from its stars. Dallas Stars net minder Ben Bishop proved to take it to another level and shutdown the Preds offence. That wasn’t all from Dallas either, they had stellar production in these playoffs by forwards like Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin.

Finally the most predictable outcome in the NHL Playoffs Western Conference first round was the San Jose Sharks win over the Vegas Golden Knights. Even though this was predictable to some you couldn’t help but feel angry how Vegas got robbed.

Vegas who also had a 3-1 series lead in the first round ended up losing. The Golden Knights lost but didn’t turn over and give it away. In game 6 the Vegas Golden Knights forced San Jose net minder to make a career high 58 stops.

Round 2 NHL Playoffs Picture

Round 2 of the NHL Playoffs Picture looks a little bit more unusual than ever expected. All of the NHL wild card playoff teams are still vying for the ultimate trophy in Professional Sports. You wouldn’t expect anything better from this bunch of teams now and the race to Lord Stanley is wide open.

The NHL playoff tree now looks a little bit like this.

Carolina Hurricanes vs. New York Islanders

Boston Bruins vs. Columbus Blue Jackets

San Jose Sharks vs. Colorado Avalanche

St. Louis Blues vs. Dallas Stars

These are the final eight teams still playing hockey in the NHL. Now as of midway through the series the NHL Playoff Odds look a little more complex.

The NHL Playoff Bracket is starting to look a little more complete even though some of these series’ are going to go 7 games. The biggest surprise right now is the Carolina Hurricanes which have jumped out to a 2-0 lead against the New York Islanders.

Round 2 Current NHL Matchups

The NHL Playoffs Fantasy crowd had a second chance to formulate a bracket and we aren’t sure many are doing much better thus far. Nonetheless below is a playoff breakdown of how it looks today.

Carolina Hurricanes (2) vs. New York Islanders (0)

Boston Bruins (1) vs. Columbus Blue Jackets (2)

San Jose Sharks (2) vs. Colorado Avalanche (1)

St. Louis Blues (2) vs. Dallas Stars (1)

If all these series end like how they are looking now, we might see a couple cupless teams battle it out in the 3rd round of the Western Conference. We may also have a new team name on the Stanley Cup.

The teams remaining which have never won a Stanley Cup are the Blues, Sharks and Blue Jackets. Anything is possible in this new NHL Playoff Tree.
