Toronto-born pop star and apparent sports hexer Drake doomed the Toronto Maple Leafs with the ‘Drake Curse’ Wednesday night in their game against the Boston Bruins.
This loss does nothing to separate the theory that the pop star’s appearances and support of sports competitors brings about pure misery. This phenomenon began with his association with the Toronto Raptors in 2013.
Portraying himself as a super sports fan, Drake became the official ambassador for the Toronto Raptors in 2013. Since that time, the team has lost all the major games they’ve played in.
Every year after, Drizzy’s support has resulted in despair for those he chooses to follow.
Drake’s single ‘Draft Day,’ a dedication to his friend, and a likely first-round draft pick that year, Johnny Manziel. The former Heisman Trophy winner was on fire leading up to the 2014 draft. Picked up by the Cleveland Browns, Manziel fizzled out of the NFL after no more than two seasons.
Canadian basketball player Andrew Wiggins was mentioned in the chorus of the same song and was nearly booed out of the Target Center back in December of 2018 after missing a couple of free throws.
Wiggins just finished up the fifth year of his career in the NBA with the Minnesota Timberwolves and to say fans are not impressed with his performance is an understatement.
Serena Williams competed in 2015 against relative underdog Roberta Vinci at the U.S. Open. Drake was in the stands for that one, too, rooting for Williams. Considered a major upset, Williams lost the match.
In 2016, the Golden State Warriors, who were 73-9 in the regular season, faced the Cleveland Cavaliers in the championship finals. Drake routinely namedropped Steph Curry and the Warriors in his pop songs at that time. The Cavs won the series 4-3.
After befriending Odell Beckham Jr. in 2016, the NFL superstar went on to break his leg a year later. More recently, the two have been involved in some legal troubles stemming from a 2018 nightclub beating handed out to Bennet Sipes. Sipes alleges that the two stars ordered the attack.
In 2018, Drake positioned himself alongside Conor McGregor before his bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov. At the weigh-in Drake paraded around McGregor with an Irish flag, hamming it up for photographers. McGregor ended up getting his ass handed to him by Khabib at UFC 229.
Biting from L’il Wayne one more time with the Leafs loss on Wednesday, Drizzy has caused quite an uproar.
Dart Guy, Toronto Maple Leafs superfan, chimed in on Twitter, jokingly suggesting both Drake and Justin Bieber be banned from attending the Scotiabank Arena.
When asked about the hex by reporters earlier today, Leafs coach Mike Babcock called it “the craziest thing I’ve ever heard.”
Fans, on the other hand believe the curse to be a thing to be wary of. More importantly, they just want Drake to stay away from the sports they love.
One of the most compelling tweets came from @RCMX93, reasoning, “I’ve defended Babcock from onslaughts of angry mobs all year, but this is enough. If you support the Drake curse, that’s negligence at the highest levels, and your job should be on the line. Drake should be banned from arena for all future Leafs games imho.”
Apparently Drake has the same effect on sports that he does on rap music. He ruins it.
In other news, Drake may have brought back Bam Bam Bigelow from the dead…
