Fear The Kraken! Seattle Names NHL Team

The NHL’s expansion team has now officially released their name, Seattle Kraken. Can the Kraken  be the name we all come to fear? Only time will tell.

The list of team names Seattle had decided to choose from was long. Some had wanted them to be called the Seattle Sockeyes or even Seattle Whales.

The list also included Seattle Cougars, Seattle Eagles, Seattle Emeralds, Seattle Evergreens, Seattle Firebirds, Seattle Seattle Rainiers, Seattle Renegades, Seattle Sea Lions, Seattle Seals, Seattle Totems and Seattle Whales. However the Kraken won the spot.

The Seattle Kraken which is the name of a fictional sea monster that is as vicious as a king cobra, is a marketing dream. The octopus resembling character will be an easy sell for merchandise.

The sea monster has tentacles like a giant octopus, which could be a great thing come playoff time if this team does in fact thrive in a league where parity runs wild.

Throwing an octopus on the ice is a Detroit Red Wing tradition that has been around for a dogs age. That may change now though as the tentacled sea created may make a resurgence on the west coast.

In March of 2018 the Kraken had only been a +650 favourite for the team name. Times are a changing now and the tide has turned, no pun intended.

Now that the team name has been selected it will be only a matter of time before the players are selected in the 2021 expansion draft. Before this happens though the NHL has to finish off the 2020 season and playoffs and hopefully something can be done with the coronavirus and we can get back to packed arenas for the 2021 campaign.

Wikipedia describes a Kraken as a legendary cephalopod-like sea monster of gigantic size in Scandinavian folklore. The Kraken also has some other significance with another Seattle favourite “Starbucks”.

In the historic 1851 novel Moby-Dick, the Pequod encounters what chief mate Starbuck identifies as: “The great live squid, which, they say, few whale-ships ever beheld, and returned to their ports to tell of it.”

The Kraken team colours are a unique blend of blues and the team can be described as one of a kind!
