Don Cherry, the beloved Hockey Night in Canada commentator and respected hockey analyst, unloaded Sunday afternoon. Not even 24 hours after the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Don Cherry savagely rips the Leafs over draft picks and he could be right.
The Leafs, who lost to the Boston Bruins in the first round of this years playoffs, needed more size to compete with the Bruins.
The playoffs this year outlined that if you want to win the Stanley Cup you also need physically dominant player.
Cherry, who is no stranger to controversy, offered his thoughts on how both the Washington Capitals and the St. Louis Blues pathed their way to being champions.
In the statement he released via Twitter, ‘Grapes’ points out a number of things. First off, he mentions how Tom Wilson “stirred the drink” for the Caps. He also added that he watched him play Minor Midgets in Toronto.
The Toronto league, which has some 40,000 players in it, has been a development hub for successful NHL teams, ironically enough, excluding the Leafs.
Cherry went on to describe how size matters and how he watched players like O’Reilly, Binnington and Pietrangelo play while growing up in Toronto.

Cherry finished the statement pointing out that the Leafs drafted outside of Canada. He focused his frustration by emphasizing how St.Louis won the cup with a “big strong club” and “16 Canadians.”
Cherry completed his rant about the Leafs by lambasting them for picking one Russian, two Finns and three Americans.
Don Cherry has always been a cheerleader for Canadian players and especially the ones from the GTA. It’s also no surprise that he is usually right about this, considering he spends countless hours in the arenas surrounding the GTA.
Keep it up ‘Grapes’!
