Head coach of The Calgary Flames Bill Peters is under investigation today in response to allegations made by Akim Aliu, a former player of Peters, on social media on Monday according to Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek and Eric Francis.
Aliu took to social media on Monday in regards to concerns about his former coach. While not initially mentioning Peters outright, Monday’s tweet made it fairly clear as to who he was talking about and has since clarified further.
The initial tweet reads, “Not very surprising the things we’re hearing about Babcock. Apple doesn’t fall far from the Tree, same sort of deal with his protege in YYC. Dropped the N bomb several times towards me in the dressing room in my rookie year because he didn’t like my choice of music. First one to”.
Speaking to TSN, Aliu expanded on the issue, referencing Peters conduct with him during his time with the AHL’s Rockford Ice Dogs during the 2019-20 season.
Aliu stated to TSN, “He walked in before a morning pre-game skate and said ‘Hey Akim, I’m sick of you playing that n—– s—,’ ” referring to Peters’ complaints with Aliu’s selection of hip-hop music during warmups. “He said ‘I’m sick of hearing this n—–s f—— other n—–s in the ass stuff.’”
The NHL public relations department said Tuesday, “The behaviour that has been alleged is unacceptable. We will have no further comment until we have had an opportunity to look into the matter more thoroughly.”
