The 1987 Canada Cup was one of the greatest sporting tournaments outside of the Olympic Games. Back in the 1980’s when you didn’t have NHL’ers at the Olympics, this was the best hockey competition around.
The final and historic game that sticks out in my memory is the Canada vs. USSR series. The first two games ended 6-5 for each squad and that set up the final game. The game was tied 5-5 when the great Mario Lemieux, Dale Howerchuk and Wayne Gretzky worked some of the greatest magic ever to be seen.
